ThymicUK at The Christie in Manchester, 4 December 2019

This was the first meeting of ThymicUK to be held outside of London and was kindly hosted by The Christie. It was a very successful meeting with more than 40 patients and carers attending. Some had travelled from as far away as Brighton and Kent. We know that the healthcare professionals attending the meeting were astonished to see so many patients in one place at the same time!

Interesting and informative presentations were given from the fields of oncology (Dr Rohit Lal, and Dr David Gilligan), surgery (Mr Andrea Billie), immunology and immunological complications (Dr Hana Alachkar), supportive care and survivorship (Dr Colsom Bashir), and radiotherapy (Dr Maggie Harris). There then followed a Q&A with Dr Yvonne Summers, and the specialist nurses Marrika Colvin and Marie Eaton. Notes from all the presentations are available to ThymicUK members.

One of the things that provoked a lot of interest was the importance of mental wellbeing and the concept of mindapples. Mindapples is a “five-a-day for your mind” programme to benefit mental well-being. It asks people to think of five mood-boosting activities – mindapples, for short – and to incorporate them into their daily routine. Further information about mindapples in the nhs can be found here https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/improve-mental-wellbeing/

Our grateful thanks to Dr Summers and Marie Eaton who did much of the organisation and to all the healthcare professionals who gave up their time to speak with us. And finally, a big thank you to everyone who was able to travel to The Christie.
