Life was good.

In 2014 I had taken redundancy from my civilian job with the Metropolitan Police after 28 years.

I had planned what I called my gap year. It consisted of travelling, volunteering and updating my skills.

In 2015 I started an internship with Macmillan Cancer in their events department. In the first week I started to feel ill and deterioated very quickly. I was hospitalised with severe jaundice. Doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong. I was continuously asked if I drank heavily because of the inflammation of my liver. I didn’t! I had a CT scan on my liver and they could see a shadow in the lower part of my left lung.  They further investigated and found 2x 8cm masses. One in my chest and the other in my lower left lung.  Following a biopsy and a long wait for results they confirmed that I had Thymoma which had metastasised to my lung. Thy what?

I was also diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis which they believed was linked to the Thymoma.

Then followed appointment after appointment, chemo, surgery, radiotherapy.  Things were stable for a while and I went back to work part-time early 2017.

Unfortunately late 2017 I had a recurrance. in my left lung.  There was little response from standard chemo. I went on a trial drug which was harsh. I managed 2 cycles before it was stopped due to side effects.

I’m now back to watch and wait.

One thing that was very apparent to me is that there is little or no information or knowledge of Thymic Cancers. I started the Thymic group in 2018 not really knowing where it would lead, but what I did know was that something was needed for patients to feel less isolated.  The group is going from strength to strength and I hope will make a difference for us.

I was recently diagnosed with MG. Despite that I am working full time, I recently got  married and will be shortly moving into a new home.

Life is still good.
